Having just finished a month-long east coast tour supporting Little Birdy, Red Jezebel are ready to release their eagerly anticipated album How I Learnt To Stop Worrying. Featuring the singles Kicking Deadly Sins and More Than You'll Ever Know which have already received widespread national airplay and Rage attention, the album is a remarkable achievement from a band that’s been through its fair share of up and downs. The result is 13 tracks of undeniable songwriting talent, not bounded by any thoughts of genre-fitting or adherence to current musical trends.
From the slow, delicate atmospheric opening of Hollywood to the grunge riffage of Kicking Deadly Sins, the country-tinged murder ballad Lost My Gun to the Spanish-flavoured Find My Way, this new release is one hell of a musical ride.
The bizarre journey of Red Jezebel to this point has certainly been one of the rockiest in recent Australian music history. Recently parting ways with major label Warner Music, following their signing to Festival Mushroom Records, has seen Red Jezebel return to their indie roots now. Not that the band released anything on either of those major labels!
A ten year career has also seen the band – consisting of Paul Wood, Mark Cruickshank, Alex Hyman and Dave Parkin - release four EPs and the acclaimed 2004 Revelations album. Along the ride Red Jezebel have also supporting the likes of Garbage, Elbow, Brad, Powderfinger, Something For Kate and The Living End as well as tour the country with Eskimo Joe, Jebediah, 78 Saab and more.
Inititial plans for an EP release were delayed due to various record company-related factors, at which point it was agreed that Red Jezebel should take matters into their own hands. As such the band parted ways with Warner Music, who were extremely decent about the whole thing and gave the band full ownership of all the recordings. The album, How I Learnt To Stop Worrying, will now be in stores Australia-wide Saturday October 13.
Red Jezebel couldn't be more excited to have come through this process with the best songs of the band's career, surviving the major label system at a particularly temultuous time for the record industry around the world.
How I Learnt To Stop Worrying was recorded at Perth’s Blackbird Studio and produced by two-time WAMi award-winning producer Dave Parkin (Snowman, Bob Evans, The Panda Band, The Exploders) who is now also a full-fledged member of Red Jezebel since taking over guitar duties in November 2004.
The official launch of the new album will be at the Rosemount Hotel on Saturday, October 20, with other Australian dates to follow. Special guests will be Melbourne rockers The Exploders plus Perth friends Kill Teen Angst and Russian Winters. Tickets are on sale now.
East coast shows will also see The Exploders on board, along with Sydney quartet The Mares.
